In the picturesque town of Groton, CT, our client sought to transform their backyard into a clean, low-maintenance outdoor sitting area. Originally, the space was uneven, undefined, and not functional for seating or relaxation. So, their vision was clear: a simple, clean sitting area that required minimal upkeep and felt intentional. To achieve this, our team collaborated with them to create a design that focused on simplicity, structure, and longevity. Once they approved the design, we got to work prepping the land before installing a crushed stone patio with a cobblestone border to clearly define the space. The result is a beautifully transformed space that improves the usability of their backyard, providing a clean, functional, and inviting outdoor living area.
Collaborating With Our Client to Design Their Outdoor Sitting Area Was the First Step
The first step of this low-maintenance backyard upgrade project was to create a design. Our client's goal was to craft a simple, defined outdoor sitting area where they could comfortably enjoy their backyard, and we collaborated with them to bring their vision to life. They didn't want an overcomplicated design, so we focused on simplicity, structure, and longevity. We worked with them to design a clearly defined sitting area that felt intentional, opting for a crushed stone patio that would require minimal upkeep. Once we solidified the details, we got started on site prep!
The next step was to prep the space to create a solid, clear foundation for their sitting area.
With the design of their outdoor sitting area complete, the next step was to prep the space. We began by excavating the existing surface, removing 2-3 inches of soil to create a level foundation. After that, we installed landscape fabric to separate the soil from the stone we planned to use for the patio and reduce weed growth, maintaining the cleanliness and longevity of the sitting area. This thorough site preparation was crucial for establishing a solid, clear foundation that ensures long-term stability, preventing the area from shifting or deteriorating over time.
The Final Step of This Backyard Upgrade Was to Install the Crushed Stone Patio Area

Following the prep work, our team installed the sitting area as the final step of this backyard upgrade. Jumbo, mortar-set cobblestones were used for the border, as they provide a strong, permanent edge restraint that prevents movement over time. This choice also ensures the longevity of the sitting area and creates a clean, high-end visual border that enhances the overall aesthetics of the space. The patio itself was constructed using 3/4-inch crushed stone, which offers excellent drainage, low maintenance, and a clean, consistent finish.
The transformation of our client's backyard is remarkable. What was once an undefined, underutilized area has now become a clean, functional, and inviting sitting space. The clearly defined outdoor living area makes their backyard more usable, and the low-maintenance design allows them to enjoy it for years to come.
